Odours

Odour Issues?

One of the first things visitors notice when entering your home is its smell. Guests might even sense an odour before ever opening the door to see the inside. Odours are your home's first impression, and if it's a bad one, you'll want to do something to rid your home of the offensive odour for good.

Some odours are easy to identify and simple to eliminate. However, there are those certain kinds of smells that linger longer and are hard to get rid of. In some cases, even the sources of these smells are hard to find. And if you decide to sell your house, they can actually affect the price you get and your property's marketability!

Unfortunately, not all odours will disappear with a soap and water wash. There are always smells that cannot be neutralized at the source because the source cannot be accessed. A musty basement, stale smelling closet, or a hidden animal nest in an inaccessible wall may disperse smells that cannot be directly dealt with.

Common Recurring or Lingering Odours

Pet Odours

These may come from “accidents” in the house and from older or hard to find pet stains

To reduce odour, most pet owners simply vacuum often, clean diligently, and make sure that any "business" done by their animals is promptly removed or diffused. When this isn't enough, there's a good likelihood that the odour is imbedded.

Shower Drain Odours

Some drain odours can be eliminated by using a product designed to break up gunk and film on the inside of your plumbing (available at any hardware store) or having the build up physically removed. Others are far more difficult to get rid of.

Mould and Mildew Odours

That organic, musty smell that creeps its way into many a home can be one of the most difficult to identify and remove. Often caused by mould or mildew in a place you cannot readily see, removal and replacement of materials is sometimes required to eliminate mold or mildew growth.  Mould removal can also be a benefit to your health in addition to giving a space a needed smell boost.

Outdoor Odours

Sometimes it's not just the inside of a house that stinks. One of the best ways to reduce outdoor odour is to make sure that trash receptacles are periodically treated.

Refrigerator Odours

These come from old, smelly items or from fridges that have been turned off and left sealed.

Cooking Odours

Either from cooking pungent smelling vegetables like cabbage and cauliflower or from accidentally burning something in the oven.

Smoke Odours

Smoke odours are some of the toughest to remedy—especially when clouds of smoke and fumes are constantly being created each time a cigarette, cigar or pipe is lit. Smoke can leave a residue that causes the smell to linger. Commercial air fresheners only mask odours with an artificial scent and don't provide a long-term solution.

A dingy, nicotine film and noxious smells are only a few of the good reasons to rid a home of tobacco odours. The smell can bother people with allergies and other health concerns. It also can discourage those who are trying to quit smoking. The stench can even make it harder to sell a house.

Waste Bin Odours

Air freshener only camouflages foul odour by just replacing other smell. It does not eliminate the root of the smell of food scraps. Household garbage and trash bins are a haven for germs, pests and bacteria – the main cause for odour problems. If wheelie bins are left unclean they are a health and hygiene hazard, and emit unpleasant odours.

Typical methods, such as simply hosing bins out with water does not remove odours and bacteria, and impacts on water conservation and the environment. Bins need cleaning maintenance and should be both deodorized and sanitized.

But why does the Wheelie Bin smell? The reason a wheelie bin smells is because of the bacteria that are thriving in the bin. Once the bin starts to smell it is a health and hygiene hazard. There are many diseases around and in your bin to be wary of which include: Tuberculosis, Weil's disease from rodents, Salmonella, E.Coli, Listeria and many more that can start to grow within hours of discarding waste into the bin.
